Every year on December 5th we celebrate the International Volunteer Day. Volunteering means giving, sharing, standing by others, supporting causes you care about and creating a better future for everyone. It is a chance for individual volunteers, communities and organizations to promote their contributions to the development in their communities.

          The 8th graders of School No. 11 Botoșani decided to make a donation of food for the animals at TRIOVET Animal Shelter, which has been the refuge of animals in need for many years.

          In our school there is a long tradition of fundraising for the benefit of stray or abused animals, so both students and teachers made a donation of 1000 lei. In the same spirit, primary classes B and C (5-7 year olds) donated food for the kittens and puppies housed by the shelter.

          On a cold December day 13 students and 3 teachers bought food for cats and dogs worth 400 lei and set off for the TRIOVET Animal Shelter. The shelter currently houses 240 cats, 40 dogs, 2 swans, 4 goats, a hawk, a deer, and lots of storks, hens, cocks, turkeys and ducks. The shelter is run by doctor D. Bejinariu and dr. D. Bratu, who welcomed us and told us the story of some of the animals in there.

            Most of them were abandoned, abused or unwanted animals and they had suffered long before they were taken over and cared for by these wonderful people who do their job with passion and dedication.

          We could see with our own eyes that, sometimes, man's love for animals comes to an end when their farm animals are not able to work well anymore. Dogs, cats, hens, pigs, goats and sheep are among those which usually suffer a lot at the hands of man.

          The lesson we learned that day is that all animals, especially those which interacted poorly with the humans after the difficulties they encountered, deserve just as much love and attention as the purebred pedigrees.

          Their need for affection and attention was overwhelming and we could experience that during our visit to the shelter.

          We, as young students, can make a difference by doing volunteer work for animal shelters or fundraising for abandoned animals.
